For Steve

2023-2025

two beams of soft light

two movers, cast in yellow and blue

two musicians

responding, listening, reacting to the other

they melt, and move through the sound,

moving to the touch resonating on the surface of the skin,

For Steve

they move

they push and pull

being with their own bodies

carefully.

For Steve is an improvised performance work between dancers and musicians influenced by the work of Steve Paxton and the principles of Contact Improvisation. Impacted by the pandemic and a lack of touch, the work explores how we can recall the touch of others and find ways to connect other than through the physical. Through conversation between dancers and musicians, questions explored include: When are we in contact with others? How are we in contact? Is the physical the only form to access contact? For Steve offers opportunities to delve into these questions and unpick these principles through improvised conversation amongst the two art forms of music and dance.

For Steve has been commissioned by Moving Art Management, Dance City, The Place, and Durham Fringe Festival.
